I'm a black father with a 16 year old son, and I taught my son that policing started in southern slave-holding states, which had roots in slave patrols. These were groups of White men that were empowered to enforce laws that were related to slavery. They were asked to locate and return run away nigger slaves; crush any type of uprising led by nigger slaves, and punish nigger slaves that were found or believed to have violated plantation rules....Slave patrols were also allowed to forcefully enter any nigger slaves home, based on suspicions that they were sheltering run away nigger slaves.
